The Specialist

Built on Evidence. Grounded in
Practice.

Gary Javonena is a fully accredited Myotherapist and the founder of Surf & Sports Myotherapy in Noosaville, Queensland — the Sunshine Coast’s dedicated clinic for active people navigating musculoskeletal injuries, chronic soft tissue pain, and sports recovery.

Gary’s clinical foundation was built at RMIT University, where he completed his Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy in December 2017 — one of Australia’s most rigorous entry pathways into the profession. His studies covered evidence-based assessment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation, dry needling, and rehabilitation programming.

Before bringing his skills to Noosa, Gary spent six years embedded in a high-performance private practice environment in Torquay, Victoria — Australia’s surf capital and a training ground for elite endurance and ocean athletes. Working alongside experienced practitioners in one of the country’s most active communities gave Gary the clinical depth that textbooks alone cannot provide: reading movement patterns, managing load-related injuries, and communicating complex rehabilitation plans to people who simply want to get back in the water, on the trail, or back on the start line.

“I moved to Noosa in April 2019 with my wife and two kids. The six years in Torquay — working in a busy private practice with a bunch of legends — helped me become the practitioner I am today.”

— Gary Javonena, Founder, Surf & Sports Myotherapy

He holds current accreditation with the Myotherapy Association Australia (MAA) for the period April 2025 – June 2026, ensuring his practice meets Australia’s standards for evidence-based myotherapy treatment, professional development, and private health insurance eligibility across major providers.

The Athlete

He Treats the Body He Trains.

In a town defined by its active lifestyle, Gary doesn’t just treat athletes — he is one. His
personal training load across ultra-marathons, triathlons, surfing, and kitesurfing isn’t a
side hobby. It directly informs the clinical picture he builds for every patient who walks
through the door with a load-related injury, overuse complaint, or performance plateau.

When Gary assesses a runner presenting with IT band syndrome, or a surfer managing a
persistent rotator cuff strain, he’s drawing on personal, embodied experience of what
those tissues are asked to do at threshold effort. That’s the first “E” in Google’s E-E-A-T
framework — and it’s the most difficult kind to fake.

Beyond his own training, Gary is a deeply embedded member of the Noosa community.
He is an active participant in the Noosa Heads Surf Club, involved in the Nippers
program, and serves on the Noosa Lifeguards team on weekends. You’ll find him at the
Noosa Triathlon, Noosa Swim, Noosa Marathon, and Surf Life Saving events — not in the
spectator stands, but competing, volunteering, and contributing.

This community presence is not incidental to his clinical work — it is a core reason why
Gary understands the specific demands of Noosa’s active population: the asymmetrical
paddle load of a longboarder, the cumulative knee stress of a trail runner preparing for
the Glasshouse Mountains 50k, or the shoulder positioning demands of a competitive
kitesurfer. Sports recovery on the Sunshine Coast requires a practitioner who genuinely
lives the sport. Gary does.

The Approach

No Hype. No Overselling. Just
Results.

Gary’s clinical philosophy is shaped by a simple conviction: the goal of every session is to
make you need fewer sessions. That means a thorough, evidence-based assessment first
— identifying the actual driver of your MSK injury or soft tissue dysfunction — before a
single treatment technique is applied.

  • Assessment before treatment. Every consultation begins with a structured musculoskeletal assessment. Gary identifies movement faults, load contributors, and tissue drivers before forming a treatment plan — not after guessing.

  • Patient education and home exercise programming. An effective Home Exercise Program (HEP) is a cornerstone of Gary’s approach. Patients who understand their condition and have a clear self-management strategy recover faster and stay recovered longer.

  • Evidence-based treatment methods only. Gary applies techniques with demonstrated clinical utility: soft tissue manipulation, joint mobilisation, dry needling, trigger point therapy, cupping, and progressive exercise rehabilitation — tailored to each individual’s presentation, sport, and goals.

  • Genuine need, not re-booking pressure. Treatment plans at Surf & Sports Myotherapy are built around what your body requires, not around maximising appointment volume. If you need four sessions, the plan reflects four sessions.

  • Continuity and compliance over passive treatment. Gary values patients who are proactive and communicative — and in return, he provides practitioners who are consistent, empathetic, and available. That two-way relationship is where real sports recovery happens.

Whether you’re a competitive triathlete managing a soft tissue flare-up ahead of the
Noosa Triathlon, a weekend surfer dealing with a chronic shoulder impingement, or a
desk worker with Sunshine Coast lifestyle ambitions and a body that hasn’t quite caught
up — Gary’s evidence-based approach to MSK injury management is designed to get you
back to what you love.
